Ankle Strap Flats

Thursday, January 30, 2014

These are one of those trends that I kept seeing & thought to myself, ugh those are so weird, why would anyone wear those? But then I kept seeing them over & over again & the more I looked at them, the more I liked them! Now, I'm borderline obsessed with owning my own pair. Does this happen to anyone else? Please tell me that I'm not the only one!

That last time we went to Canada...

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

Back in November we traveled up north to Vancouver BC for a long weekend after Thanksgiving. We had our first Airbnb experience, but I neglected to ever share photos from our trip #badblogger! As with every trip I take, I usually come home with approximately a million photos. This trip was no exception. Here are a few favorites from one of our most loved cities!
Lunch @ Tuc Craft Kitchen - so yummmm
All bundled up because it was cooooold!
Coffee Crisp what what (my favorite Canadian candy bar!)
The Oysters @ Rodney's Oyster House were amazing
Beyonce was doing a show at BC place when this photo was taken...
You can't see her, but I promise she's in there!

You remind me of...

Monday, January 27, 2014

I attach scents to memories. If I'm walking around somewhere and smell a familiar scent I'm instantly transported back to a memorable time & place. I like to think of it as a small way of keeping me connected with my past. Same thing with music... if I hear a certain song I can say... "Oh that reminds me of this one time in college..." but that's a different post for a different day! Here are a few of my favorite scents over the years and the memories that I connect with them...

Tommy Girl: Back in high school when Tommy Hilfiger was all the rage, this was the must-have perfume & you can bet that I went through a few bottles during my senior year of high school!
Ralph: I remember the magazine ads for this perfume with the sample scent glued on the page. I was instantly obsessed! The day that this perfume was available, I rushed down to Macy's and purchased a few days before I started college.
Angel: For the longest time this has been my go-to perfume, my signature scent if you will. It started in early college and I still always make sure that I have a bottle on hand. Hand down, the one perfume that I always receive compliments on.
Viva La Juicy: I was beyond excited when Juicy Couture came out with their first perfume - the only problem was that I absolutely hated it! I waited until they released a few more & instantly fell in love with this one. It definitely brings me back to some of the most fun times I've ever experienced living in Seattle for a few years.
Live Colorfully: My sister gave me a sample of this & it was love at first smell! I wore it all over Mexico & spritzed this on while getting ready on my wedding day. I will always associate this scent with one of the best times of my life.
Burberry BritI've been wearing this scent a lot in the past few years. Luke has Burberry Brit for men & we were them together - so this perfume really just remind me of Luke now :)
Michael Kors: Another perfume sample that my sister gave to me (along with a handful of others). I randomly pulled it out of the bag & wore it to work one day. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it! I want to make some new memories with this one! :)

And just for fun... Please tell me that you remember these old perfume gems: ExclamationTribe, 90201 & Malibu Musk. Every girl that I knew was obsessed with these in grade school. Malibu Musk was mine & my sister's personal favorite :)

When friends come to visit...

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Some of Luke's friends from college came to visit back in December. They live in Indianapolis & had never been out to Portland before. They're beer lovers just like us (one of them is even a brewer!) so naturally we spent the entire weekend taking them all over town & showing them how Portland does beer. It was so much fun; a weekend of real indulgence. We definitely needed a few weeks of salads & daily gym trips to recover, but it was worth it to spend time with these people :)

A brunch at Cafe Nell...
Beers at Hopworks Bike Bar...
Beers at Rogue Brewery...
We signed up to be members of the Rogue Nation
& got to hang out with the President of the Rogue Nation as well.
Brunch at the Country Cat...
And lastly, we took them to our favorite neighborhood market to stock up on some beers (the largest collection of beers I've ever seen before - at John's Marketplace)
Not pictured... stops at Ecliptic Brewing, Green Dragon

Black & White

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

I have a thing for stripes. A serious thing I might add. I think you can incorporate stripes into every detail of your life (like curtains & walls... much to Luke's dislike). When the stripes are black & white, that's when they're the absolute best! Here's a round up of some of my favorite stripes.

Changes to our house & oh yeah... changes to the blog!

Monday, January 20, 2014

I mentioned a little while back that we're doing some renovations to our house & that one of those renovations would be built-in shelves in our living room. Well guess what?!? Okay, we don't actually have them yet... but we do have a super ugly demoed wall to look at until they get installed :)

Doesn't it figure that the girl that takes pictures of everything doesn't have a proper before photo?! Lesson learned this time around. The next project will have all the proper documentation, but until then this Christmas photo from a few years ago will have to do as the "before".

See... super ugly demoed wall that we get to stare at until our shelves are built & installed. When we started to remove the mantle, tiling & molding around the fireplace we noticed that everything had been installed incorrectly. The tiles were barely attached to the wall, the cement board on the hearth was barely secured. It made for an easy removal & also re-assured me that this project will help add value to our home... as we're going to install everything new correctly!

And just for fun, I included a photo below of some inspiration for this project. Ours won't look exactly like this, but some of the design details will be included (like the built in mantle...).

So there you have it, our first "real" house project is officially in the works!

And while we're on the subject of changes, I changed my blog design/layout! It was definitely time for a change & time for something a little more streamlined & simple. For the longest time I've had such colorful & busy layouts - I've always felt like the photos I included in my blog posts clashed with my blog; hence the reason I decided to go with my current design. After a lot of searching for the perfect simple design, I purchased this one from Lynsey's Shiny Magic Etsy shop. It was affordable & very easy to install yourself. If you're looking for a new design, I highly recommend working with Lynsey!

Well, that's all I have for this Monday. Hope you all have a fantastic week!

Bring your Instagrams to life!

Thursday, January 16, 2014

I recently ordered some Stickygrams & turned some of my favorite Instagrams into magnets. It was extremely easy; you just link your Instagram account, click the photos you want turned into magnets & checkout! About a week later your magnets arrive in your mailbox! They're so cute (they're also the actual size of your Instagram photo on your phone) & are pretty good quality! I already want to order more!

I made sure to order most of my favorite Instagram photos: a few photos of the puppy, some Chicago skyline photos for Luke to have in his office, one of my favorite wedding photos & some shots of us on one of our most recent date nights!

If you order your own set of Stickygrams use this code FRIEND131D to recevie $2 off your order!

Recipe: Cauliflower Rice

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

I've been hearing a lot about cauliflower rice lately that I just had to give it a try. To my surprise it was super easy & so good! We placed grilled salmon on top of our cauliflower rice & it made for a super delicious & healthy dinner. It tastes so decadent you forget that you're eating something that's good for you.

Cauliflower Rice
Serves: 2

Approximately 10 cauliflower clusters 1 tbs olive oil
1/4 cup onion, chopped
1 clove of garlic, chopped
salt & pepper to taste

Place the cauliflower in a food processor and pulse until the cauliflower is the size of rice or cous cous.

In a saute pan, heat the olive oil, onion and garlic for a few minutes until translucent. Add the cauliflower rice and cook for approximately 5 minutes, or until completed heated through. Add salt & pepper to taste.

A new year

Sunday, January 5, 2014

It's a new year & there's something that I just really love about the feeling of a fresh new start & a blank slate. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it feels like the start of new & good things. I've never been one to make new years resolutions. I do, however, make a small set of goals (I actually try to do this monthly as well).

Last year was a good one. It brought me a lot of joy (my marriage, new friendships, strengthening of existing friendships, traveling) and some lessons learned (standing up for what I believe in, letting go of negativity). It was a year of tremendous growth and just overall content. It always seems that with every new year I look back & feel a little happier, a little wiser & just more at peace with everything.

This new year has some pretty big shoes to fill if it's going to live up to last year :). We have a few things up our sleeves to make this new year a good one & I can't wait to share it all along the way!

And we started off the new year
by booking a little trip in a few months...

Hope your new year is off to a great start as well!
