20 Questions

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Happy Wednesday, friends! Long time no talk! You know how it is, when life gets busy, the blog takes a back seat (well that's how it is for me sometimes). Jane posted these "20 Questions" on her blog last week and I just had to play along, too :) So here it goes!

1. What brings you the greatest joy? There are A LOT of things that bring me joy. Our dog doing the silliest and cutest things is pretty high up on the list. So is getting to spend my life with Luke. Being so close with so many good friends. Having the best family. I like to see joy in many aspects in my life. I really can't narrow it down to just one thing... I try to find joy all around me.

2. What are your vices? Starbucks iced coffees, Pepridge Farm chocolate hazelnut pirouettes, watching the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills... And all at the same time :)

3. What is on your nightstand? A candle, an Eiffel Tower ring holder, a few bracelets, my glasses and my iPhone. Exciting stuff over here.

4. Do you have a secret talent? Heck yes I do! I'm a master parallel parker! I can fit my car in the tiniest of spots with ease. I always joke that I should put this skill on my resume, because I see SO MANY people around town doing it wrong (ah hem, pulling into a parallel parking spot head first...) and it's something that I have down.

5. What is your greatest indulgence? We just bought a brand-spankin' new car! I mean it's fully loaded with all the bells and whistles. It's a far cry from the hoopity I was cruising around in before. It's by far the nicest thing we own now.

6. What should every woman try at least once in her life? A "Me Day". A day where you do whatever you want and do it all for yourself. Take yourself out to brunch, to a movie, get a pedicure, go shopping, take a long bubble bath surrounded by candles and then watch some trashy TV in your pj's. Taking a day off to just treat yourself is something that we should all be doing!

7. What makes you laugh? What doesn't make me laugh. The dog makes me laugh like every minute. Luke makes me laugh just as much. And our friends! Every time I'm with my friends were always laughing.

8. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you? I'm actually really shy and sometimes it takes me a long time to really feel comfortable around people. Getting out and meeting new people is always something that I wish came easier to me. Just give me time though :)

9. What is on your bucket list? Traveling the world, duh! A trip to Paris. A trip to Thailand. A trip anywhere in the world actually, I'd actually like to see most of it before I die.

10. What is on your feet right now? Boots. Little brown boots.

11. How did you make your first dollar? Probably from a Lisa & Frank sticker sale I had in my bedroom when I was a kid. I think I sold a sticker to my sister for a dime or two. Did anyone else set up little shops in their room to sell things to their siblings? Only me? Okay...

12. What superstition do you believe in? I don't believe in any.

13. What items in your closet do you wear the most? I have this stretchy pair of black pants, haha, that are beyond amazing. They are a cross between leggings and jeans. They are hands down the most comfortable and flattering thing in my closet. I only paid $20 for them and I am seriously kicking myself in the rear end for not buying 10 pairs of them!

14. What is the best gift you've ever received? Please forgive me for my cheesiness... but one of the best gifts I've ever received is my parents providing me with a sibling. I seriously don't know what I'd do without my sister. Growing up we didn't get along (at all!) but now we're best buddies and I wouldn't have it any other way!

15. What is on your liquor shelf? What isn't on our liquor shelf? :) We have a bar cart and right now there are about 15 bottles of wine, a few bottles of beer and some gin, whiskey and tequila.

16. What is on your kitchen counter? A toaster oven, a Keurig, a marble serving board, a block of knives, a bunch of random receipts and pieces of paper that we're in the process of organizing...

17. What would you never leave home without? My iPhone. Me and that thing are attached at the hip (er, I mean hand...).

18. What movie has the greatest ending? I don't know. I could name a lot of movies that have less than great ending though... Okay, I just thought of one! Silver Linings Playbook. The ending of that movie seriously put the biggest smile on my face :)

19. Who is on the guest list for your ideal dinner party? There's no question... JT and Jimmy Fallon.

20. What is one thing you wish you had known when you were younger? Do you own thing, don't go along with what everyone else thinks is cool, go with what you think is. It's good to be different.

If you play along, too, let me know! I always love reading these things!

The Perfect Desk

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Who doesn't love a perfectly styled desk. When I'm super busy trying to meet a deadline and getting stressed out at work it's nice to have a few pretty things on my desk to look at. My desk at work is rather plain, so any of these items add some instant happiness and inspiration.

Happy Love Day

Friday, February 14, 2014

Happy LOVE DAY, friends! We have a very low-key night planned for this evening. It involves a nice dinner from the Smitten Kitchen cookbook (one of my favorites) and starting season 2 of House of Cards (eeeep, so excited). Luke already outdid himself with a few very thoughtful gifts (I think I'll keep him!), so I hope my nice dinner for him turns out okay :) Hope you all have a wonderful love day!

Little bag love

Thursday, February 13, 2014

I'm usually a large purse kind of girl. The more you can carry around with you, the better.  Lately I've had a thing for cute little purses though. A serious thing. I really like the idea of carrying around a smaller purse on the weekends. It's perfect if you're out shopping or brunching with girlfriends. It's no fuss & low-key. I've been lusting over the Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac for a few years now (included below!) & I'm really thinking about purchasing it in the next few weeks (hello Nordstrom gift card!). What do you think? Do you like these little bags?

City Inspired Candles

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

I'm a sucker for a good smelling candle. I also might have a serious candle addiction. I buy so many of them on a regular basis. When I came across these city inspired candles on the Bath and Body Works website I almost died! How cute are they!? As soon as all the snow and ice melts in Portland, I'm making my way to the nearest Bath & Body Works to pick up a few of these! They're on sale right now, too!

Weekend Highlights

Monday, February 10, 2014

I must clarify... "Weekend Highlights" is an extremely misleading title for this post. Since Thursday around 2pm we've been completely snowed in. We had a major storm come through and dump buckets upon buckets of snow and then freezing rain a few days later on top of all the snow. Portland is hardly equipped to handle even a few inches of snow, let alone over a foot. We left the house twice to walk down the street to get groceries, but other than that, we've been stuck at the house. We live at the bottom of a hill and there was NO way our car was getting up it (believe me, we tried :) ). Anyhoo, here were my weekend highlights (and not in order of most exciting, haha):

  • Luke and I not killing each other! Our house is on the smaller side, so there's not much room to escape each other. We did surprisingly well, haha!
  • taking care of Luke because he is sick :(
  • Deep cleaning all the bathrooms in our house. I mean down on my hands and knees scrubbing the floors and cleaning all the nooks and crannies.
  • Completely cleaning out our extra bedroom.
  • Running many loads of laundry and organizing my closet.
  • Watching the Olympics, a lot of them.
  • Making these amazing chicken meatballs. I served our with whole wheat spaghetti.
  • Burning through three candles, my favorites!
  • Drinking wayyyy too much hot cocoa.
Hope you all had a fantastic weekend and that it was better than ours ;)

In PDX: Dinner @ Grassa

Thursday, February 6, 2014

Last week we decided to drive into the city for a date night. When I say drive into the city, I'm talking about like 5 miles or so, haha, hardly a drive. We had been craving something fresh, something local, something Portland-y. We landed on Grassa. Owned by the same folks that operate Lardo, we knew we'd be in for a treat since we're both huge Lardo fans.

When you step inside Grassa you get the feeling that you're in a small, yet upscale cafeteria - complete with lockers on the wall, communal seating and an open view of the pasta kitchen. It's chaotic yet comfortable.

The food at Grassa is the definition of handcrafted comfort food and fresh ingredients. I had the Spaghetti 'Aglio Olio' and Luke had the Carbonara. Both were fantastic dishes. We had a side of garlic bread along with some beer and house red wine (tip: if you don't like the limited beer selection, you can order a beer next door at Lardo and bring it over to Grassa). Our total dinner came to just around $30, pretty awesome for a Friday night out on the town!

We'll definitely be back here soon; I hear their meatballs are to die for!

Carbonara
bucatini, pork belly, fried egg, pecorino
Spaghetti 'Aglio Olio'
garlic, chili, olive oil, grana, bredcrumbs

Waterlouge App

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

I came across this app while perusing through my Instagram feed the other day. I kept seeing random people, whom I follow, posting these amazing watercolors (which just so happens to be my favorite art medium). My feed started to fill up rather quickly and I decided that I needed to have the app, too, haha! Within minutes it was downloaded on my phone and I was instantly hooked. I even laid in bed the other night converting some of our wedding photos into watercolors, haha.

You can find the Waterlogue app HERE. It's $2.99, but I think it's totally worth the price. I'm certain that I've got my money's worth already. :)

Love Inspired

Monday, February 3, 2014

It's February friends! Can you believe it!? January just flew by & here we are... at the start of love month! Truth be told, I'm not a huge fan of celebrating Valentine's Day, I never really have been actually. That doesn't mean I don't like love inspired gifts though :) There are some pretty cute girly gifts floating around this time of year & this month is a good excuse to indulge in a few extra pink, purple & red pieces!
